US raw steel production hits 28-month high

 
U.S. raw steel output totaled 1,809,000 net tons last week—the highest level since early October 2008—as mills operated at an average capability utilization rate of 74.8 percent, up 1.1 percent from 1,789,000 tons the previous week.
In the corresponding week last year, mills produced 1,720,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 71.1 percent, according to the American Iron and Steel Institute, Washington.
Mills have produced a total of 10,844,000 tons so far this year at an average capability utilization rate of 73 percent, up 11.8 percent from the same period last year, when mills produced 9,701,000 tons at an average capability utilization rate of 67.5 percent.
