Australia’s coking coal shortage may affect crude steel production

Mr. Gerald McCloskey, the president of McCloskey Group indicated that the shortage of coking coal caused by Australia’s serious floods might limit the crude steel production in 2011.

So far, the supply of coking coal has reduced by 15 million tons because of the floods; furthermore, it has been seen that the floods in February would brought more severe problems to mining companies.

Meanwhile, even the mining companies from Canada, the US and Mongolia have tried to supply the coking coal to compensate the shortage; however, as the quality of coking coals from those country are lower relatively, those products can’t satisfy the current strong demand.

  1. Have you seen whats been reported in coal industry and coal reports lately? The latest coal market news is that emerging countries are predicting to use large amounts of thermal coal for power generation and metallurgical coal for steel production and they are investing heavily onshore and offshore to secure the coal they need so that they can meet increasing demand for electricity and steel.
