Brazil's iron, other metal-ore exports up 95% in third week of January

Rio de Janiero (Platts)--24Jan2011/345 pm EST/2045 GMT

The value of Brazil's exports of iron ore and other metal ores nearly doubled in the third week of January from that of the second week, Brazil's commerce ministry said Monday.

Brazil, the world's second-largest exporter of iron ore, bauxite and manganese, shipped an average of $202.12 million/day of metal ores during the five business days during the week ended Saturday, 95% more than the $103.66 million during the previous week, the ministry said. The amount in the third week of January was 26% more than the $160.35 million daily business-day average for December, which had 23 business days.

The ministry only provides the average value of business-day exports in its weekly trade figures and does not break out iron or other metals ores. Separate iron ore figures are only available on a monthly basis when the government also releases the tonnage of exported goods.

January iron ore data by weight and value are expected to be released 1700 GMT (12 pm EST) on February 1.

Iron ore represents the largest portion of Brazil's metal-ore exports by value, followed by copper, manganese and bauxite.

In December, iron ore exports were $153.9 million/d, or more than 95% of all Brazilian metal-ore exports in the month, according to preliminary data for the month.

The average for the first three weeks, or 15 business days of January, was $139.26 million/d, or 15.9% more than January 2009 when mineral ore exports were $54.37 million/d.

In January 2010, iron ore accounted for 88.5% of all mineral ore exports, according to final data for the month. In January 2010, Brazil exported $962.1 million worth of iron ore during 20 business days in the month, the ministry said. Total mineral ore exports were $1.09 billion.

Metal-ore exports are Brazil's largest export category by value, followed by oil and petroleum derivatives which were worth $135.35 million/d in the third week of January.
